Matka kanjon(Kanjon Matka)

Skopje's most popular nature escape — the Treska canyon with its emerald lake, the 14th-century Sveti Andrej monastery, kayaking on the water, and Vrelo cave, one of the deepest underwater caves in the world. Just 15 km from the centre, but it takes the better part of a day.

Tetovo & Šarena džamija(Tetovo / Šarena džamija)

North Macedonia's second-largest city, majority Albanian, and home to one of the most unusual monuments in the region — the Šarena (Painted) Mosque of 1495, whose walls are covered in hand-painted flowers and landscapes. Nothing else in the Balkans looks like it.

What to see

• •Šarena Mosque (Aladža Mosque) — painted floral motifs, original 1438
• •Arabati Baba Tekke (a 19th-century dervish complex)
• •Tetovo's old čaršija
• •The Šar mountains in the backdrop — the Popova Šapka viewpoint 30 min further on

• 💡Buses to Tetovo leave roughly every hour from the main bus station.
• 💡The Šarena Mosque is open to visitors outside prayer times — avoid Friday morning.
• 💡Pair with Popova Šapka (Šar mountains) if you have a car — the cable car runs in season, the viewpoint is open year-round.

Stobi arheološko nalazište(Stobi)

An ancient Macedonian-Roman city dating from the 4th century BC — one of the most significant archaeological sites in the region. A preserved theatre, forum, villas with full-colour Roman mosaics, and early Christian basilicas. 90 km south of Skopje on the road to Thessaloniki.

What to see

• •The 7,600-seat Roman theatre
• •Mosaics in the Villa of Peristerias and the Episcopal Basilica
• •The Forum, the North and Central basilicas
• •A small museum at the entrance with finds from the site
• •Stobi winery nearby — wine tasting (book ahead)

Tips

• 💡A car is far more practical than the bus — Veles/Gradsko buses pass by, but it's a 1.5 km walk from the stop to the site.
• 💡Summer heat is brutal — start early (9am) or go after 4pm, and bring water and a hat.
• 💡Pair with Stobi winery (5 min by car) for a tasting — the perfect way to close out the day.
