Bratislava

Bratislava

The Slovak capital sits 60 km downriver on the Danube — the closest national capital to another national capital anywhere in the world. A small but dense old town with Bratislava Castle perched above the river, the baroque Michael's Gate, the famous dwarf statues on street corners, and a buzzing café scene. Easy and cheap for a day trip.

60–75 min direct train (REX) or Twin City Liner (1h 15min by boat)€16 EuroRegio return ticket · boat from €25 one-way · castle €1260 km
A two-country day with a different baroque feel, plus cheap beer and food

What to see

  • Bratislava Castle — a white square with 4 corner towers, views of the Danube and (on a clear day) Vienna
  • The Old Town — Michael's Gate (one of the four original city gates)
  • The bronze dwarves — Čumil (the man peeking out of a manhole), Schöner Náci, the Napoleonic soldier
  • The Blue Church — a fully sky-blue Art Nouveau chapel
  • The UFO restaurant atop the 95m SNP Bridge tower — view over the city plus lunch

Tips

  • 💡The EuroRegio ticket (€16 return) covers the train and a full day of public transport in both cities — best deal going.
  • 💡Slovakia is in the eurozone and Schengen — no border check, no money to change.
  • 💡The Twin City Liner catamaran is more atmospheric but slower and pricier than the train.
  • 💡Beer in Bratislava is 2-3x cheaper than in Vienna — try Stary Pivovar and Bratislavský meštiansky pivovar.
  • 💡You can walk the Old Town in 3h — fill the rest of the day with the castle or the UFO bridge.
Wachau dolina (Melk & Dürnstein)

Wachau dolina (Melk & Dürnstein)(Wachau)

The UNESCO Danube valley 80 km west of Vienna — terraced vineyards along the river and two jewels 35 km apart: the baroque Melk Abbey (one of Europe's most beautiful) and medieval Dürnstein, where King Richard the Lionheart was held captive in 1192. In summer, the boat ride between the two is essential.

Wien Hbf → Melk train 75 min · Melk → Dürnstein boat 1h 30min · Dürnstein → Vienna train 1h 30min€18 return train · boat from €30 · Melk Abbey ticket €1580 km
The Danube, wine, baroque and medieval architecture — the most beautiful day trip when the weather is good (Apr-Oct)

What to see

  • Melk Abbey (Stift Melk) — a baroque library of 100,000 books, a frescoed church, a terrace above the Danube
  • Dürnstein — the blue tower of the Augustinian church, plus the castle ruin above (where Richard was held)
  • The boat ride Melk → Dürnstein, 1h 30min — vineyards in summer, apricot blossom in spring
  • Wachauer Marillen apricots and Riesling cellars on both banks
  • Spitz and Weißenkirchen — Heuriger villages strung along the route

Tips

  • 💡The boat only runs April-October — in winter you take the train both ways (less romantic).
  • 💡Melk: book the English-language tour online — the abbey is stunning, but without context half of it is lost.
  • 💡Wine tasting in Dürnstein: Domäne Wachau (the cooperative, brilliant Riesling and Grüner Veltliner).
  • 💡Marillenknödel (apricot dumplings) — a seasonal treat in July-August, ask for them at every tavern.
  • 💡The climb up to Dürnstein Castle is a 30-40 min uphill walk, with a perfect view at the top.
Baden bei Wien

Baden bei Wien(Baden)

The imperial spa town 25 km south of Vienna — the Habsburgs and Beethoven came here to ease rheumatism and nerves in the sulphur waters from the 19th century onwards. 14 thermal baths, a Biedermeier centre with casino and park, and the Helenental valley for walks. A perfect half-day or a full day if you include the spa.

30 min S-Bahn train or 1h on the Badner Bahn (the tram from Vienna's Opera)€8 return ticket · Römertherme €23 (4h access) · casino free entry25 km
A spa day, Biedermeier calm, an easy Beethoven pilgrimage — best in winter when the thermal waters mean most

What to see

  • Römertherme — a modern thermal complex (37°C pools, sauna, steam baths)
  • Kurpark — a Biedermeier park with a Beethoven monument and a music pavilion (free concerts in summer)
  • Beethovenhaus Baden — the house where he composed his 9th Symphony in 1821
  • Casino Baden — Austria's largest casino, in a baroque building
  • The Helenental walk — a 6 km valley with castle ruins on either side

Tips

  • 💡The Badner Bahn from central Vienna (Oper) is the most pleasant option — an hour through the suburbs, but on a proper old tram line.
  • 💡Römertherme is smaller and quieter than the bigger Austrian spas (Therme Wien) — a more local feel.
  • 💡Bring your own flip-flops and a robe to Römertherme — rental is pricey (€8 each).
  • 💡The casino has a dress code (shirt, no trainers) — pack a change of clothes if you plan on going.
  • 💡Cafe Damals in the centre — Biedermeier elegance, the best Sachertorte in Baden.
