Tivoli & Vila d'Este

Tivoli & Vila d'Este(Tivoli)

Cardinal Ippolito d'Este's UNESCO Renaissance villa (1560), with what may be the finest Italian garden in the world — 51 fountains, cascades, and water-powered organs. The same town also holds Hadrian's Villa, an imperial residence sprawling across 250+ hectares of ruins.

60 min direct train€2.60 one-way · Villa d'Este ticket €13 · Hadrian's Villa €1230 km
Renaissance fans, garden lovers, and ancient-architecture buffs; a great escape from Rome's summer heat

What to see

  • Villa d'Este — the Avenue of a Hundred Fountains, the Organ Fountain, the Oval Fountain
  • Hadrian's Villa (Villa Adriana) — the largest imperial residence ever built
  • The old town of Tivoli with the Temple of Vesta and views of the waterfalls
  • Lunch in Tivoli — Sibilla, perched above the ancient temples

Tips

  • 💡The two villas are 4 km apart — take the CAT bus from Tivoli or a €10 taxi.
  • 💡Start early (8am train) — each villa needs 2-3h, so it's a full day.
  • 💡Villa d'Este is closed Mondays; Hadrian's Villa is open daily.
  • 💡In summer: the water organs play every 2 hours — don't miss them.
Ostia Antica

Ostia Antica

Ancient Rome's port city — Pompeii without the crowds, just 30 km from central Rome. 70 hectares of ruins: a theatre, marketplace, baths, and houses with frescoes and mosaics. The best taste of antiquity within easy reach of Rome.

30 min train from Roma Porta San Paolo€1.50 one-way (ATAC ticket) · entry €1830 km
Antiquity lovers who want Pompeii without the trek to Naples; a walking day in the open air

What to see

  • The ancient theatre (still used for performances in summer)
  • The Forum with its Capitolium — the civic centre of the port
  • The Thermopolium — an ancient 'fast-food bar' with its counter still intact
  • The House of Diana with frescoes and a private pool
  • The mosaics of the Piazzale delle Corporazioni — trade guilds from across the Mediterranean

Tips

  • 💡Buy your ticket online — skip the queue, and it's cheaper than on the spot.
  • 💡Go early (8am train) — summer is brutal, and there's no shade in the ruins.
  • 💡Bring water and food — the on-site restaurants are bad and overpriced.
  • 💡Combine it with Ostia Beach (10 min further by train) for a proper Mediterranean day.
  • 💡Closed Mondays.
Frascati & Castelli Romani

Frascati & Castelli Romani(Frascati)

A hilly wine region 20 km south of Rome — Frascati white wine, the papal summer residence at Castel Gandolfo, and the volcanic lakes of Albano and Nemi. A genuine slice of provincial Italy for half a day.

30 min direct train€2.10 one-way · tasting €15-25 · Villa Aldobrandini entry ~€520 km
A wine day + an escape from city heat (the hills are 5°C cooler); papal history

What to see

  • Central Frascati — tasting local Frascati DOC wine at a *fraschetta* (wine-shop tavern)
  • Villa Aldobrandini — a baroque villa above town with a monumental garden and cascades
  • Castel Gandolfo (10 km further) — the papal summer residence, with the Apostolic Palace now open as a museum
  • Lake Albano — a volcanic lake below Castel Gandolfo, swimmable in summer
  • Porchetta sandwiches — slow-roasted pork, the local delicacy

Tips

  • 💡Frascati is for the wine cellars — Cantina Comandini and Cantina Simonelli are the classics, cheap and authentic.
  • 💡Villa Aldobrandini is partly private — gardens always, palazzo by appointment, check ahead.
  • 💡Castel Gandolfo: the Apostolic Palace is closed Mondays; the lake is open 24/7.
  • 💡August = Ferragosto = lots of things closed; check before you go in that month.
