Auschwitz-Birkenau (Oświęcim)

Auschwitz-Birkenau (Oświęcim)(Państwowe Muzeum Auschwitz-Birkenau)

The former Nazi death and concentration camp — the largest Holocaust memorial complex in the world. The visit splits in two: Auschwitz I (the original camp with the 'Arbeit macht frei' gate and the museum blocks) and Birkenau (Auschwitz II, a vast plain with the ramp, the wooden barracks, and the ruins of the gas chambers). The visit is hard but essential — and one of the core reasons people come to Kraków at all.

1h45 direct train from Kraków Główny, or 1h by carTrain €5 one-way · Car/transfer €25–40 · Organised tour €40–6065 km
20th-century history, the Holocaust — essential on a first visit to Poland

What to see

  • Auschwitz I — the 'Arbeit macht frei' gate, museum exhibits in blocks 4–11
  • Birkenau — the ramp, the wooden barracks, the ruins of the crematoria
  • An English-language guide is required in season (Apr–Oct) for daytime entries 10:00–16:00
  • Duration: 3.5h for Auschwitz I + Birkenau, including the shuttle bus
  • Silence, modest dress, no large backpacks

Tips

  • 💡BOOKING IS MANDATORY IN ADVANCE — entries are strictly regulated, and the quota sells out 3+ months ahead for the high season (Apr–Oct). Book via visit.auschwitz.org.
  • 💡Between 10:00–16:00 (Apr–Oct), entry is only allowed with an educator (a guide) — individual visits are possible only after 16:00, when no guides are available.
  • 💡Plan a full day — 2h transport out, 4h on site, 2h back, lunch in between.
  • 💡No large bags allowed (over A4 size) — the cloakrooms are small and crowded.
  • 💡Children under 14 are not recommended (officially discouraged).
  • 💡The easiest option: an organised tour from Kraków (€40–60) with transfer + ticket + guide — it strips out the logistics.
Wieliczka rudnik soli

Wieliczka rudnik soli(Kopalnia Soli Wieliczka)

A UNESCO rock-salt mine, working since the 13th century — 380 steps down to 135 m below ground into an underground labyrinth of chapels carved from salt, brine lakes, and statues of Polish kings. All carved by generations of miners out of the salt itself — the largest underground religious space in the world (St. Kinga's Chapel, 100 m long).

22–30 min local direct train from Kraków GłównyTrain €2 one-way · Tour from Kraków €25–35 including transport15 km
A family-friendly UNESCO experience — the classic counterpoint to an Auschwitz day

What to see

  • St. Kinga's Chapel — a full cathedral carved from salt
  • An illuminated underground brine lake
  • Statues of Copernicus, kings, gnomes — all carved from salt
  • The tour runs 2h, about 3 km of walking across levels -64 to -135 m
  • A constant 14–16°C year-round — bring a light jacket

Tips

  • 💡Book online ahead — the tourist tour (in English) runs every hour, but it sells out in summer.
  • 💡Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia station is 5 min walk from the mine entrance.
  • 💡Not for anyone claustrophobic or with serious knee issues (380 steps down, lift back up).
  • 💡Lunch in Wieliczka afterwards — Restaurant Halit inside the mine, or a couple of taverns in Wieliczka old town.
  • 💡Pair it with the return to Kraków for an evening in Kazimierz.
Ojcowski Nacionalni park

Ojcowski Nacionalni park(Ojcowski Park Narodowy)

Poland's smallest national park (24 km²) in the Prądnik valley, 25 km north of Kraków — limestone cliffs, caves, medieval castle ruins, and the bizarre 'Hercules' Club' rock formation. The ideal nature break after a few city days.

Bus 410 / minibus 50–60 min from KrakówBus €4 one-way · Car/transfer €30 · Tour from Kraków €30–4525 km
Nature, hiking — a counterweight to museums and wartime history

What to see

  • The 'Maczuga Herkulesa' (Hercules' Club) — a 25 m limestone tower
  • The ruins of Pieskowa Skała Castle — Renaissance rebuild perched above the valley
  • Łokietek's Cave (550 m) — where King Władysław Łokietek hid from the Czech army
  • The Wąwóz Prądnika — a 1h walk through a gorge with a stream and little bridges
  • A tiny wooden chapel 'on the water' — built over the stream in 1901

Tips

  • 💡Bus 210/304/410 leaves from Dworzec MDA (the bus station next to Kraków Główny) — check the timetable, weekends run thinner.
  • 💡By car is easiest — free parking at the park entrance.
  • 💡Łokietek's Cave needs a separate ticket (15 PLN, open Apr–Oct).
  • 💡Pair it with lunch in the village of Ojców — pierogi and the local *pstrąg* (trout from the stream).
  • 💡In winter the park is open, but the cave and castle are closed — best in Apr–Oct.
