Potsdam & Sanssouci

Potsdam & Sanssouci(Potsdam)

A UNESCO city built around Frederick the Great's Rococo summer retreat — the 'Prussian Versailles'. Sanssouci Palace sits atop terraced vineyards, with a vast park holding the Neues Palais, a Chinese house, and Roman baths. The town of Potsdam itself has a Dutch Quarter and the Russian colony of Alexandrowka — a surprisingly multicultural history.

  • Cecilienhof — where the 1945 Potsdam Conference was signed (Stalin/Truman/Churchill)

Tips

  • 💡Sanssouci Palace — buy a timed-slot ticket online ahead of time (sanssouci.de), entry is scheduled.

Sachsenhausen — koncentracioni logor

Sachsenhausen — koncentracioni logor(Sachsenhausen)

A former Nazi concentration camp 35 km north of Berlin, today a memorial. 200,000 prisoners passed through it (1936-1945), and after the war it continued as a Soviet 'special camp' until 1950. The hardest experience outside Berlin — but essential for understanding the city's historical memorials.

S-Bahn S1, 45 min + 20 min on foot (or bus 804)One-way €4.40 (ABC zone) · ABC day pass €11.40 · entry is free35 km
A serious history itinerary, deeper understanding of the Holocaust, an educational visit

What to see

  • Permanent exhibition: barracks, mortuary, crematorium
  • Tower A — the entrance gate bearing 'Arbeit macht frei'
  • Station Z — the execution complex
  • The Soviet Special Camp (1945-1950) — a lesser-known chapter
  • English audio guide (€3) or free English-language tours Friday-Sunday

Tips

  • 💡Entry is FREE, but the audio guide (€3) or a guided tour (€18 group) is recommended.
  • 💡Not for children under 14 — the content is disturbing.
  • 💡On Mondays the indoor permanent exhibition is closed, but outdoor access still works.
  • 💡The full grounds take 4-5h to walk if you want to see everything — bring water and proper shoes.
  • 💡Be back in Berlin by 5pm so you have a 'lighter' end to the day — don't plan clubbing the same night.
Wannsee — jezero i konferencija

Wannsee — jezero i konferencija(Wannsee)

Europe's largest urban lake (Großer Wannsee), with Strandbad beach — the 'Berlin Riviera' for summer swimming. Plus: the villa where the 1942 Wannsee Conference was held, at which the Nazi elite planned the 'Final Solution' to the Jewish question — now a memorial museum.

Summer downtime, beach + history in a single day, families with kids

  • 💡Pfaueninsel: take the 218 bus on to the ferry; there's no café on the island — bring a picnic.
